OFFICIAL OPENING OF THE 11TH EDITION OF BUCHAREST PHOTOFEST

Witness: Images That Refuse to Forget

We live amid an excess of images and, at the same time, a steady decline in their ability to provoke a response. WITNESS, the theme of the 11th edition of Bucharest Photofest, starts from here: if almost any moment can be captured and consumed instantly, the question is no longer only what can be photographed, but what makes an image matter.
The edition is built around photography as a long-term commitment and as a form of responsibility towards what is photographed. Over ten days, the festival offers around 40 events in 10 venues across Bucharest, with more than 200 artists from over 20 countries on show: exhibitions, film screenings, masterclasses, workshops, photo walks, photobook presentations and photography projections.
The opening also brings Witness: Images That Refuse to Forget, an exhibition created with UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, marking 75 years since the signing of the 1951 Convention relating to the Status of Refugees. The photographs span decades of the agency’s work alongside refugees around the world. The opening evening also includes Minamata, Andrew Levitas’s film about W. Eugene Smith’s last photo essay.
Witness: Images That Refuse to Forget
Seventy-five years ago in Geneva, the Convention relating to the Status of Refugees was signed. For UNHCR, it remains the cornerstone of international protection: the principle that people fleeing persecution, conflict and violence have the right to seek safety.
The exhibition brings together photographs from the UNHCR archive covering seven decades of work alongside refugees. The first image shows the signing of the Convention in 1951. It is followed by Hungarian refugees arriving in Austria in 1956, Rwandan refugees in Uganda, Algerian families sheltering in Tunisia, people rescued in the South China Sea, refugees from Kosovo crossing the border in 1999 and Liberian children in camps in Sierra Leone.
One thread of the exhibition runs through Romania: the emergency transit centre in Timișoara, opened in 2008; the refugee centre at Romexpo in Bucharest, where more than 500 people were arriving every day in December 2022; and the Isaccea border crossing. Since 2022, more than 200,000 refugees from Ukraine have received temporary protection in Romania.
Each photograph is accompanied by its place, date and context, and by the name of the photographer, among them Ivor Prickett, Roger LeMoyne, Radhika Chalasani and Olivier Jobard.
MINAMATA [film screening · Friday, October 9, 2026, from 20:00 @ POINT]
As part of the official opening of the 11th edition of Bucharest Photofest, POINT (Strada General Eremia Grigorescu 10) will host a special screening of Minamata (directed by Andrew Levitas, USA/UK/UAE, 2020, 115 min, English with Romanian subtitles), starring Johnny Depp and Hiroyuki Sanada.
Featuring a musical score by Ryuichi Sakamoto, the film follows the true story of renowned photojournalist W. Eugene Smith and his wife, Aileen Mioko. Sent by Life magazine in the early 1970s to the Japanese coastal city of Minamata, they documented the tragic struggle of a community poisoned by mercury from a local chemical factory. The movie highlights how their work—marked by the iconic photograph "Tomoko in Her Bath"—triggered global awareness and demonstrated the essential role of imagery as a form of responsibility and a witness to history.
